New Year's
So how are you ringing in the New Year? Western calendar, I mean. Fireworks (with $25 permits and nothing to buy)? Drunken revelry (with a designated driver)? Church or other worship (over the din of pyrotechnics)? A nap and a brief visit by Dick Clark on TV? What's your traditional way of crossing over to the next 365 blank pages? Is there any rich, cultural meaning, or is it all about fun?
We might try to catch the big aerials at Aloha Tower Marketplace tonight, provided the kids are up to it. But otherwise, tomorrow, it's just a stop by my family's Zen Buddhist temple in Waipahu, then perhaps if I can find the ingredients today sharing some ozoni with my mom in Mililani.
Rest and relaxation, and back to work the next day.

No lavish sprays of color over the Hawaiian skies to bid farewell to the year past are planned. Instead, I'll sit in my country home in the middle of nowhere [in Texas], enjoying the evening with the keikis and hubby. We may catch a glimpse of Dick Clark on the television, but all will be low-key and quiet. Tomorrow, it's off to Mom's house for our family get-together --- good talks and yummilicious tempura.
Happy 2003!

Tranquilize dog, be grateful the delinquents who used to live across the street are no longer there throwing aerials at my car, watch whichever program has Rod Stewart singing "These Foolish Things" (special memories for Mom), and otherwise enjoy the evening.
Happy New Year, all!

It's funny. As a kid it was a really big deal when I got old enough that I was allowed to stay up until midnight arrived on New Year's Day. (I had tried for several years to stay awake in bed but hadn't succeeded.)
These days, of course, parents allow kids to stay up until incredibly late hours all the time, but my sister and I had very strict ... and early ... bedtimes.
I guess I'm into my second childhood because this year, as last, I expect to be soundly asleep when the hour arrives.
Probably wake up with all the noise, but [shrug] roll over and go back to sleep.

That Funny! People were coming into the store with permits only to find all the fireworks were sold out.. At least the state got to make their money. I was actually on the Channel 9 News telling customers the fireworks were all but gone.
I used to spend my New Years at a distant camping ground on the Kenai River in Alaska where my friends and I would drink and set off hundreds of dollars worth of fireworks..
This year I'm going to try and catch the different shows in Waikiki and at Ala Moana.
I also hear China Town is a cool place to see the people setting off fireworks, if you can see through the smoke.
I'm actually trying to pursue a girl from work so maybe I will get lucky for New Years. Not that kind of luck, just lucky enough to be in her company.
Happy 2003!!
Anyone have any New Years resolutions?

Did not do anything really special for new years. I helped my friend connect her 2 macs to her cable modem (using a router) last night, watched the DVD of Lilo & Stitch after that... I went home at 9:30 pm, watched a re-runs of The X Files on TNT cable until the clock struck 12... Stuck my head out of the window and watched the fireworks and smoke intensify for a few minutes before going to sleep.
I woke up at 5:30 this morning and shot some sunrise photos at Diamond Head lookout this morning. That's it.
Happy New Year.

I had to work today, so I stayed in on New Year's Eve. I was playing my Law and Order interactive game when midnight struck.
All I have to do is get through store inventory this weekend (2 a.m. to 10 a.m.!) and I can put this holiday crap behind me.
SXSW, here I come ...
