Posted by keithk at January 02, 2003 05:25 PMYeah I just saw it on the SciFi channel. I wasn't paying much attention to the offer, if it comes with a certain size or type of pizza or you can buy it seperately.
It seems more like glazed malasadas.
Good eye, Keith. The Domino's Pizza website shows them among their other sides. The description:
"Twelve delicious dough balls, baked to perfection and covered with cinnamon. Served with sweet icing."
Not exactly malasada, or andagi thanks to the cinnamon and the icing in particular but darn close, at least in apparent size and texture.
Anyone eat 'em yet?
But aren't malasadas fried? I'm not getting my hopes up. Malasadas aren't all that common out here in the Bay Area. The only place I've been able to find them has been at the big Aloha and Hula festivals.
Both malasadas and andagi are deep fried. I'm guessing that this is the baked spherical counterpart to the little dessert pizzas made with pizza dough and sweet stuff. Sounds like it's worth a try. Did you know that our local Dominos is owned by a Higa? Which is an Okinawan last name? And andagi is Okinawan? Hmmmm. :)
According to the homepage it says they are baked dough covered in monterey jack and colby cheese.
The closest I've come to malasadas are zeppoli, which are sold at street fairs in NYC. They're deep-fried, but not as light and fluffy as malasadas.
Hey Bill.. you can actually buy some malasadas at this Portugese bakery in Santa Clara.. Cross streets are El Camino and Scott in the Mervins Plaza....they make every M-Sa mornings...
