Star Trek: Nemesis
Saw Star Trek: Nemesis a second time at the Ward Theatres tonight.
I first saw the movie on it's second day but I didn't post to HawaiiStories since I figured someone else would have posted to it.
My initial reaction to this movie was that it seems that villians-with-ultimate-weapons just seem to have bad year (the other one was Die Another Day) in 2002. After seeing Nemesis a second time I still think Shinzon didn't wielded the ultimate weapon properly, but it was the only one available to use against the Enterprise.
The parts I liked was the external shots of the Enterprise.

I saw "Nemesis" on the first day, without reading any reviews about it. It had all the elements of a good Trek movie except Shinzon needed to be meaner. The film didn't really show why he wants to destroy earth; but we know why he hates Jean Luc. In the opening scenes, it was the Romulan senator who killed people, not Shinzon. It would have helped if he personally destroyed a Federation space station or some innocent passerby research ship.Still, out of the 10 movies, I'd say "Nemesis" ranks in the top five. For fans, it gave us everything we wanted to see: the Enterprise actually ramming something after feigning so many times (Best of Both Worlds, Part II); Riker and Troy finally getting married, Picard again incensed at a foe, Guinan, Wesley, etc. I was hoping they would separate the saucer section in their fight with Shinzon, or perhaps have the USS Voyager and USS Defiant show up in the battle. That would have been classic, wouldn't it?

"Shinzon needed to be meaner": Heh. Many reviews commented on his whiny-ness. A couple lamented the lack of "real villains" in movies today, blaming it on Gen-X.
"I was hoping they would separate the saucer section in their fight with Shinzon": As a sign-off flourish, perhaps. But remember how, in the series, every problem seemed to be solved either through separating the saucer section or putting Ensign Wesley Crusher in charge? It would've elicted groans from some.
Speaking of Wil Wheaton... Wesley was in "Nemesis"?
I know if you're not a Trek fan, you probably won't like the film... but I used to be a hardcore trekker. Would I like "Nemesis"? Would it fit comfortably in the "even numbered films" Trek theory?
Madnamo helpfully grades it in the top five among all ten Trek franchise films. Would that be something like "better than VI and IV, but not II"? Any other comparisons?
Man, the me of ten years ago would be so disappointed I didn't see this opening night, or at least opening week. With all the "must-see" movies out now, it looks like my DVD player will be quite busy in four or so months.

Yeah, the Time Traveler's protegee', Wesley, had a cameo in Nemesis. He did have a speaking part but it was cut. Poor thing.

- Yes Wil Wheaton was in Nemesis. It was during the toast scene to Riker and Troi, he was sitting next to Dr. Crusher.
- Saucer seperation. Between the series and the movie Generations, they did four seperations but the 1701D had families on board so the saucer seperation was to keep them safe and the lower section would go on to battle whoever threaten the ship. For the 1701E I don't think that ship carried families so there was no reason to seperate the ship into two parts to do battle.
- Sometimes I would have taken off from work to watch the openning of a Star Trek movie. Didn't do it for this movie but seeing it on the second day was within other Trek viewings. However it had a few weeks between seeing the two viewings, normally it is about a week or less.
- I really don't know why Shinzon wanted to wipe out Earth. Romulan I can understand, maybe Vulcan.
- The Romulan senator who killed the rest of the Senate was an ally of Shinzon. One thing I couldn't figure out is how come the Federation never noticed that the entire Senate got wiped out.

Hello to all the locals! Got here from Google, because I just signed up at the website above. I was thinking maybe there would be 3-4 people already from Hawaii but was shocked to find I was the only one! I don't know how else to reach Hawaii trekkies so I hope this isn't treated as spam :(
If we get all excited about family gatherings, football, and Chinese New Years then why not Trek? Please go sign up at the site above, and yes I'm the host for now. Very sorry if I have offended anyone.

K.C., you must know about The Last Outpost, right? It's a Star Trek and sci-fi fan club in Hawaii, and it's been around for almost a decade. (I should know -- I used to be a member back in ... well, a while ago.) Check them out instead! Meetup.com doesn't seem to be working well out here.
