Hawaiian Graffiti

I love to read graffiti. Don't you?

Urinal and toilet-stall graffiti is probably what I see the most of, and that's not bad, but have you ever read the study-carrells on the second floor at Hamilton library? Hilarious stuff.

You'd think that after an intro like that, I'd have a great list to get things started off with, but I don't. So someone help me out.

You know, I'm so used to seeing toilet stall graffitti like "Kimo wuz hea" that I wonder, how do they spell it in America anyway? "Jimmy was here" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

what's with the "roscoe" graffiti all over the place? i see it all over waikiki, chinatown, and on the UH campus...

Damn, maybe I just live in a good neighborhood or something but I haven't noticed any grafitti lately. I remember when some kids went nuts at Kalaheo H.S. back in the mid 90's and grafittied every building. That looked like it was a lot of hard work...

Funny you should mention this observation. I myself, don't appreciate the graffiti, but I do understand the tempation to do it.

Ocassionally, I'll be there, doing my number 2, I'll be bored out of my mind. I'll probably have a pencil behind my ear and will think (only think, never act upon) writing something stupid or poignant on the wall or on the side of the toilet paper dispenser.

There's a great short story by Stephen King called "All that you love will be carried away". In it is a man who is contemplating if he should continue with his plans of suicide or not. The thing stopping him is that he doesn't want to lose his book of toilet-graffiti, that he has collected from all over the US, when he dies. There's a lot of funny/poignant graffiti in that story if you care to read it.

I remember all the graffiti on the desks on high school. We'd write little messages or poems and sometimes the person in the next period would add stuff.

Posted by Albert on September 11, 2003 9:26 AM:

There was an amusing graffiti debate recently, Darwin vs Jesus, on one of the bus stop benches across from Sinclair Library, the best UH display I've seen since a quite talented poet used to leave his works scribbled on tabletops at Manoa Garden. Afraid the toilet graffiti at UH is pretty substandard stuff, though.

Posted by Sin on September 11, 2003 4:09 PM:

Hey Cheyne I just read that story. Isn't that part of a collection of short stories by King?

Posted by cheyne on September 11, 2003 11:36 PM:

correct sin! it was a part of the "everything's eventual" compilation. i heart stephen king.

which one was your favorite tale, sin?

Posted by Ryan on September 12, 2003 12:27 PM:

The stairwells in the art building at UH used to be a decent showcase. I was never sure if it was semi-sanctioned, or if the creatively inclined really did invest that much effort knowing that it could be painted over the next week.

Bill recently posted an entry about the shrimp truck out at the North Shore that seems to be a mobile message pad.

That said, pointless tagging graffiti generally annoys me - rushed scrawls to proclaim some kind of allegiance, across a school wall or over a freeway sign. It's not art to me so much as the adolescent equivalent of pissing to mark territory. Although some acts of vandalism - notably those surf-esque arrow stickers that turn up on traffic lights - certainly seem to require a greater degree of insanity than what I'd usually ascribe to your average local thug.

I love reading Graffiti. In highschool I used to be an avid participant in tagging whether it was legally on a piece of paper or illegally on a street sign or park bench. My handwriting today has evolved from my days of doing graffiti. I write in all Caps and much of the symbols look like something you may see scrawled at a bus stop somewhere.

Today I can look back and say that it was just rebellion but I'm still a fan of Real Graffiti.. when people put time and energy into a large colorful mural. I think it can definately be a real art form. The other week I was in Chinatown and saw a wall with several different large pieces, the colors and styles were just amazing.

I think Graffiti is a form of rebellion more than it is just vandalism. Corporate America can spend millions of dollars on a new building or subway system but you can always put your mark on it even if they try to whitewash it the next day.

I have a book called "GRAFFITO" where I found a quote that has always stuck in my head.

"Private Property is Stolen Land."

Let's see Cheyne, nothing jumps out at me right now...hmmm...

I am a Dark Tower fanatic so the little snippet on Roland the gunslinger held great facination for me but it wasn't that great. There was one tale about a guy who caught a ride with a dead man to visit his mother in the hospital and had to make a gut wrenching decision. I'd have to say that story was pretty powerful and made me think about what choice I'd make were I in his shoes.

"Kimo wuz heah" is pidgin English...which we've been speaking way before MTV. The majority of people in Vegas are blacks and Mexicans? We have blacks and Mexicans in Hawaii (American Indians too).

Yeah, I remember seeing 'Kimo wuz hea' and 'Lani Girl + Junior Boy 4-Eva' since I was at Koko Head Elementary School back in - oh, never mind...

We should have a contest this year for the "dumb responses" bait-post of the year.

It's just amazing. And baffling.

This thread is just pure comedy by now, you got all the internet gangsta's coming out of the woodwork.

I was walking down Ala Moana Blvd. the other day near Ward theatre and there was a kid walking infront of me with his arm in a sling. He looks around and then pulls out a fat tipped marker and start taggin up a light pole. He was making eye contact with another kid across the street who also had his arm in a sling. That kid was doing the same thing. I watched them make their way down Ala Moana hitting up street signs, bus stops and anything that could be written on.

Smart kids. Those arm slings were brilliant, good place to hide your marker and who's gonna suspect that.

emerg.. what u write? the public views it as an eyesore.. in truth it is another medium.. its just that there is no where that graffiti writers can turn to but the streets.. will the government provide a free legal wall? doubtful.. the chinatown legal wall came down as the building behind it went up.. Many people respected aerosol art in that degree given enough time to finish what they started without getting heat from authorities.. the art community embraced that.. yet nothing is done to create more legal walls and businesses and freeways suffer to quick tags and half ass fill ins.. u think lingle will give a shit? in the public eye.. spraypaint is not to be used other then painting a chair or a fence.. but once its used as a medium it automatically becomes graffiti and falls under the gang stereotype.. there is more then just kids being vandals.. there are some true kings who paint with alot of heart and dedication.. Tell the State or tell the City to do something about it.. this island is only so big..
