Scofflaws

I was standing at corner in Chinatown last evening waiting for the light to change. There was a big sign that said "no right turn on red", but a couple of cars whizzed right without even stopping.

I wonder what the most commonly ignored laws are in this town? I'm regularly guilty of scoffing at the law against drinking in parks, occasionally at the ones forbidding certain substances.

Riding a bicycle on the sidewalk must be in the top ten.

No need plead the Fifth, what's your most common "crime"?

Um. Riding a bicycle on the sidewalk is fine, in most areas. Just not "business districts," notably Waikiki and downtown, I think. Which isn't to say I'd not discourage it. Bicyclists have a right to the road, darn it!

As for myself, I teeter near scofflaw status when it comes to street parking near where I live, which is banned from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. - meaning several of my neighbors and I race for a spot come 5:30. Except, of course, it's usually closer to 5:20. Sometimes we sit in our cars in case a cop rolls by (which one does, once in a blue moon), but sometimes we take our chances and take off, just hoping no police come by in the next ten minutes or that any officer who does has a fast watch.

During the "technical difficulties" comments were received by email even if they didn't appear here.

So okay, who was it confessed to "public nudity"?

(I plead guilty to that one only once in my 14 years on this island.)

Ok, you know that tag on the pillows? The one that says, "Do Not Remove"? .... I removed them.

I think ignoring stop signs at 4-way intersections are at the top along with keeping the money when a cashier gives out more change than what you gave him/her.

Ryan, I was walking along King Street after lunch yesterday when a woman on a bike at full speed almost crashed into me from behind. I had stepped to my left to make room for an old man walking toward me. The woman darted to her left just in time. She didn't even stop to apologize. She just kept on going.

I was inches from landing in the hospital. And they say men are jerks? Nope ...

You can rip the tags off your pillows all you want. Just don't walk into stores or wherehouses and rip the tags off their pillows.

My most common crime is jaywalking.

Yeah, I'm an avid Jay-walker, I can't wait for that little white man to say go ahead cross. I jay-walk in the crossing lanes and outside of them.

I used to ride my bike on the sidewalks in Waikiki and was always told my the bicycle cops that it was illegal. The real cops never say anything.

Now that I have a moped I most often break traffic laws. I speed the majority of the time, going 40 at full throttle instead of the posted 25. And I run the occasional red light. When I get off work at 1am and there are no cars in sight, I'm not going to just sit there and wait.

I think that's it.

James, I think Waikiki and downtown Honolulu are the two primary areas where bicycles are not allowed on sidewalks.

You have a moped that goes 40 mph? Is that souped up or stock? Whew!

I've never been hassled by the cops downtown, only in Waikiki. Several times I've had to play dumb as if I just arrived on the island.

My moped is stock and hits 40 mph on a strait away or downhill. I've been told that I could make a few modifications and actually reach 50 mph.

Wouldn't that be nice!?
