We're Back, Brah!
Sorry, no swanky new design to show off, but the good news is, HawaiiStories is running again! After the Great Crash of 2003 it better be the only crash in 2003 we've moved HawaiiStories to a more stable MySQL backend, restored all 400+ posts, and nearly all of a whopping 4,200+ comments. (We did lose a few dozen, however.) Despite all the insanity, hopefully it'll feel like nothing's changed. For better or worse.
Thanks for your patience. Now, get back in the talkstory groove! After all, it's been a blog-worthy week across the globe.
Oct. 1 Update: Comments are still not posting, but they now seem to be getting saved again (thanks Macpro, Jon, and Haken!). After prowling the support forums, where our specific database problem was declared unrecoverable, I've been poking around recklessly in the guts to see what I can find. One tweak (which sadly took with it one comment by Mitchell) got us to the "saved but not posted" level. I'm now seeing what else I can mess with.
I might just have to close and archive this current install, and start from scratch. But I definitely miss our conversations. Though it's a sorry imitation, I've set up a discussion forum for us to wade around in while recovery efforts continue.
Original Post: HawaiiStories seems to have developed an inexplicable appetite for comments. Not only are comments not being posted, but older threads that have new comments added to them are losing all their comments as well. So, I'd recommend refraining from commenting for a while, until I figure out what's up. Either MovableType (the content management system that runs most of this site) or my webhost is clearly having database problems.
Feel free to comment on this thread, of course, to test if comments are working again. But I'll expect, until I figure it out, that the comment count will increment fine, but your magnificent chunk of prose will just vanish into nothingness.
