Battlestar Galactica
For quite some time the Sci-Fi Channel has been advertising Battlestar Galactica that will debut on Monday December 8, 2003.
According to the Oceanic Digital cable guide part one will air at 7pm on Monday and part II on Tuesday at 7pm. There will be some repeats, like playing two more times on the same night and at 5pm on the next day.
I don't know at this time if these two parts are the only ones being aired or it is the start of some kind of series. I guess only time will tell.
This mini-series is a remake of the original 1978 TV series not a sequel.

I just loved the original series, even though you could tell they were capitalizing on the Star Wars phenomenom. Still, just the tagline was enough to hook me on the series(excuse the memory if I get it a little wrong): "Fleeing from the Cylon tyranny, the last battlestar, Galactica, leads a rag-tag fujitve fleet, on a lonely quest for a shiny blue planet called Earth." Will the fleet make it? How can one combat ship defend an entire fleet? Imagine how big it must be to accommodate those fighter ships.
All of this is good TV sci-fi. I'm watching.

"Creators of the Sci Fi Channel's forthcoming Battlestar Galactica miniseries promised that their 're-imagining' of the 1970s classic would be darker and grittier. In Hollywood, that can only mean one thing: more sex." Wired News, Dec. 04, 2003
I guess I'll give it a shot.

You do know that the original series is now available on a 6-DVD set?

I'm riding in the middle of the road. I'd love to see it because of the changes and updates they've done to it. Yet, it's also some of those changes that's kind of shying me away from it. I mean, the new look of the Cylons is pretty cool. But I don't know if I can get over what they did to Starbuck.
Yet, I'm fairly sure I'll be glued to the tube when the show airs.

My friend ed actually works for the company which put together the new B.G. show for the Sci-Fi channel. I think he works for FX or something. Sweeeeeeeet....

Speaking of FX, the same team at Zoic Studio that worked on Galactica also did the effects for Firefly. About 16 minutes into Galactica, you can see Firefely's Serenity landing. Check out this image from my site:

Now that both parts have been aired. Any comments about it?

I found it enjoyable. Somewhat weird though. I'm over the Starbuck being a woman thing--not that there was anything wrong with that, just different--because she has just the right attitude.
I know what they tried to do in the end was something like a Kill Bill-like ending, but I think it was rushed. Although it is a "mini-series," I believe they should've waited, fleshed out that particular character more and made the viewers care about that character before "dropping the bomb." It would have been a more powerful twist.
And the foreshadowing in the beginning (of the second part) was cool, but I missed it the first time around because they spoke too soft.
I would definitely watch further installments. We did get past the worst part though right? The whole setting up the story thing, so the action should pick up.

When the original Battlestar Galactica was a series, I hardly ever saw it. Was too busy going to school. I did see the edited theaterical release of the series premiere episodes and thought it was okay....
As I recall the original Battlestar Galactica was more "family friendly" vs. the new version that aired this past week.
But then it's been ages since I seen the original.
That said, my assessment of the new Battlestar Galactica is okay enough that I would return to watch it as a regular series as long as it kept to a tight story arc (much like Babylon 5)..... It had a good 2 part premiere if this mini-series is meant to be a pilot (as some have alluded to).
I think the actors picked for most of the principle roles are good choices. James Olmos has long since shed his Lt. Costello image from the old "Miami Vice" TV series to take on the role as Commander Adema. I like the lady Mary McDonnell who plays the president.
In the movie "Independence Day" she had a similar part playing the First Lady who died in that movie. This time she is a President with a serious personal problem.
The younger actors who play the various Viper pilots are okay. They are just the type of people you'd put in as hot shot flyboys and flygirls... BTW, I don't have any problem with the female Starbuck character since I never watched the original series to seriously identify with the original character.
The Cylons will be interesting characters that go beyond the silvery androids we had seen in years past. I guess there are different types of models, the ones that look and act like humans obviously being more advanced than the mechanical ones.
As for the bad guy, Baltar, I think the actor who plays him can grow into the role to become a real pain in the butt for the Battlestar survivors.

I kind of like this version, granted there some lose ends in the story but I suppose if they did any future installments (either as series or mini-series) they could tie up or expand on those lose ends.
