Who Are You?

Is nobody excited about the announcement that legendary English rock band The Who are scheduled to play the Blaisdell Arena on August 3? The Advertiser had a write up on the show.

The original lineup is down to Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey. (Original drummer Keith Moon died in the early 70's and bassist John Entwistle died more recently.) The current touring lineup includes Zak Starkey, son of ex-Beatle Ringo Starr, on drums and Pete's brother, Simon Townshend, on rhythm guitar, among others.

Honolulu is one of only four U.S. cities on this Who tour. The group stops here on the way back from shows Down Under and in Japan. Tickets on sale Saturday at the Blaisdell, Ticketmaster outlets and online.

So tell me, why can they get away with saying that "Who the f*ck are you?" line in the "Who Are You?" tune on the radio?

Since I didn't hear the ad, I can only make assumptions. Perhaps the censor guy was asleep? Or maybe if the jingle was in a Bri'ish ahksint, per'aps the bloke di'int hear roit.

Yeah, that was terrible. I go now.

Anyway, I thought about checking it out, but I think I'll save my concert funds for a band that I can mosh to. Gosh knows how long it's been for me.

R-Lan,

The lyrics of the Who song, "Who Are You?" include the line by Roger Daltrey, "Well, who the f*ck are you?" clear as day in the middle of the song.

It's been played on the radio for decades now and no one has ever said a word about it!

Ooh! I see. Well, truthfully, I can't recall hearing the song so I don't know.

The only thing I can relate to however, is that late nights, when radio free was running on 102.7, they'd stop censoring songs and I'd be all O_O; *shocked* then ^_^ *amused*

Here's a short clip of the song on iTunes store. (MP4)

Here's a link to the album on Amazon.com (but no clip of this song).

Here's a link to a Windows Media clip.

Here's a link to a RealPlayer clip.

That should help you place the song. I'm sure you've heard it before.

And here's a link to the online ticket ordering site.

Despite almost being killed at one of their London concerts in the Sixties (when a piece of a smashed guitar just barely whizzed past my head), I can't get very excited about seeing them now. Dylan, yes of course, the Stones too, but not half-of-the-Who.

Frankly I have never gotten that excited about The Who in comparison to other Brit invasion bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. The Beatles I'll never see... The Stones I did finally see live at Aloha Stadium in 1998.

I think what gets me not to be excited about this upcoming Who concert is the simple fact that 2 people don't really make it for me. Yes, the principle singer and guitarist Roger Daltry and Pete Townsend are there... but Zac Starkey on drums? Granted Keith Moon was a character and people have gotten used to The Who without their flamboyant drummer... fact is I can't remember who did the drums for all the years since Moon's death.

However John Enwhistle was just as synonymous to the group as say Paul McCartney is to the Beatles (both playing bass mostly)... I can't fathom to think of the someone else in his place and still calling the band The Who.

Perhaps they should just call themselves Roger and Pete.

I mean you'll never see Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr go on tour and call themselve The Beatles. Why should The Who?

I think the 3 Bee Gee brothers did the right thing after Maurice Gibb died... Robin and Barry have come out and said the Bee Gees are no more.

Ditto for Led Zeppelin. To me they don't exist anymore since John Bonham died many years ago now.

I guess what I am saying here is that individual members of many groups are so closely identified with the group that it is hard to accept anyone else in their place.
At least that's what it is like for me.

Granted while I am not the biggest Who fan around, I like a lot of their music especially the classic 1971 album "Who's Next" with that long version of "Won't Get Fooled Again". Of course recently The Who have probably become famous again since the song "Who Are You" is used in the opening credits for CSI.

And speaking of the F-word being used in a lyric that makes it to the radio. I've also heard that word mentioned on the album track of Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner" and the thing sometimes gets through on FM radio. There are 2 versions of that song, one with the word, and another one without.

OK. Enough of my lousy 2 cents here.
