Non smoker - Week 1

We’ve survived our first week of being smoke-free. It’s hard even though we had medication or patches to help with the withdrawals. The first day was pretty easy for me because the newness of being a non-smoker was exciting. Days 2-7 were really hard because the novelty had worn out after the first day. Reality sunk in and I realized that I’m not able to smoke anymore. It’s good that hubby is quitting with me because we’ve sort of turned it into a friendly challenge as we keep each other on the straight and narrow. Once we develop new habits to replace smoking we’ll do just fine.

I tested my reserve by going to the casino on Friday night and I ended up covering my nose when a smoker sat next to me. I thought I’d appreciate being close to the smoke and thought maybe if I could just get a whiff of the cigarette I’d feel I had a cigarette without really having one but when I smelled the smoke it gave me a headache. Who would’ve thunk? Although we do crave the taste and the ‘act’ of smoking we know that we can never go back because it would just make this whole week’s worth of work go up in smoke. (Pun intended)

I know it will eventually get easier but until that day comes, we just take it one day at a time, one bag of popcorn at a time, one tootsie pop (or whatever it takes to get rid of the urge) at a time. I’ve spoken to my cousin and she wants to quit too so I sent her the Become an Ex website to get information and activities to do before she chooses her quit date. Maybe she’ll get her family to quit too. :)
